2024 PSAC Men’s Soccer All-Conference: Tichy, Orten named Athletes of the Year

The 2024 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Men’s Soccer All-Conference Teams were announced on Wednesday afternoon, with West Chester’s Peter Tichy from the Eastern Division and Gannon’s Sverre Orten from the Western Division both honored with Athlete of the Year awards.

Other Major Award winners from the Eastern Division included Bloomsburg’s Patrick Walsh as Defensive Player of the Year, East Stroudsburg’s Drew Nyce as Freshman of the Year, and Bloomsburg head coach Mark Bassett as Coach of the Year.

From the Western Division, Gannon’s Pau Ferrer claims his second consecutive Defensive Player of the Year Award, while Seton Hill’s Nils Heinrich (Freshman of the Year) and Gannon’s Billy Colton (Coach of the Year) were also honored.

The All-Conference Teams and Major Awards are determined by a vote of the conference's head coaches. Voting was concluded after the regular season and prior to the beginning of the PSAC tournament.

WESTERN DIVISION

Athlete of the Year Sverre Orten led the entire PSAC in points with 29 after scoring nine goals and assisting on 11 others in 2024. He led the conference with 30 shots on goal and ranked at or near the top of multiple statistical categories, including  total shots (43, sixth) and game-winning goals (three, tied for most in the PSAC.)

Gannon’s Pau Ferrer was named the Defensive Player of the Year for a second straight season after another impressive campaign that saw him accumulate seven assists (seventh-most in the PSAC) and tally nine defensive shutouts.

Nils Heinrich of Seton Hill had a stellar debut campaign, scoring eight goals and adding nine assists for a total of 25 points (tied for second-most in the entire conference.) His shot total of 51 was also second-best in the PSAC, trailing only Orten.

Gannon head coach Billy Colton was named Coach of the Year for the second consecutive season after guiding the Golden Knights to the West’s top seed and a 13-2-3 overall record (7-0-3 in conference play.) His team scored 64 goals (25 more than Seton Hill’s 39, which was second-most) and allowed just 14, the second-lowest amount in the PSAC.

EASTERN DIVISION

In the Eastern Division, the Athlete of the Year was West Chester’s Peter Tichy. He scored five goals and assisted on five others for a total of 15 points. His three game-winning goals were also tied for the most in the PSAC in 2024.

Bloomsburg’s Patrick Walsh earns Defensive Player of the Year after helping Bloomsburg to an excellent defensive record (allowing 12 goals, the least in the conference) while contributing on offense as well. Walsh scored seven goals to lead the Huskies.

East Stroudsburg’s Drew Nyce was voted Freshman of the Year after tallying three assists and starting all 15 games in the midfield for the Warriors.

Bloomsburg’s Mark Bassett led the Huskies to a 14-3-1 overall record (7-2-1 PSAC) and boasted the conference’s stingiest defense, with just 12 goals allowed all season. The team’s 35 goals scored was third-most in the PSAC as the team also earned the Eastern Division’s top seed and hosting duties for the 2024 PSAC Men’s Soccer Championship.

Of the 52 total PSAC Men's Soccer All-Conference honorees this fall, 19 are former all-conference selections, while 33 have been named to an All-PSAC team for the first time in their respective careers.
