LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The 2024 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Women’s Soccer All-Conference Teams were announced on Thursday afternoon, with West Chester’s Faith Matter from the Eastern Division and IUP’s Hannah Scardina from the Western Division both honored with Athlete of the Year awards.
Other Major Award winners from the Eastern Division include a trio of Shepherd Rams, with Defensive Player of the Year Delaney Bittner, Freshman of the Year Hannah Wilt, and head coach Sam Odell as Coach of the Year.
From the Western Division, IUP’s Hannah Scardina was named Athlete of the Year, while Gannon’s Destinee Robertson (Defensive Player of the Year), Gannon’s Jessie Watkins (Freshman of the Year) and IUP head coach Noreen Herlihy (Coach of the Year) were also honored.
The All-Conference Teams and Major Awards are determined by a vote of the conference's head coaches. Voting was concluded after the regular season and prior to the beginning of the PSAC tournament.
WESTERN DIVISION
Athlete of the Year Hannah Scardina tallied 10 goals and four assists for a total of 26 points in the regular season and was tied for the conference lead in game-winning goals with five. She was also fourth in the conference in shots (54) and third in shots on goal (32) as IUP finished as runner-up in the PSAC West.
Gannon’s Destinee Robertson anchored the Golden Knights’ excellent defense and was named Defensive Player of the Year, as GU’s defense allowed just six goals to opponents all season, the best mark in the conference. She also chipped in with a goal and two assists on eight shots (six on target) during the season. She played and started all 17 regular season games and played a total of 1390 minutes.
Another Golden Knight, Jessie Watkins, was voted the Freshman of the Year after scoring seven goals and assisting one other. She started all 17 games in the regular season and played over 1,000 minutes in her debut campaign.
IUP head coach Noreen Herlihy collected Coach of the Year honors after finishing the regular season 11-1-4 (9-1-4 in conference play), an improvement over the Crimson Hawks’ 5-9-4 record (4-9-3 PSAC) in 2023. IUP scored 30 goals (seventh-most in the conference) and allowed just 10 (the third-lowest in the PSAC.)
EASTERN DIVISION
For the second consecutive year, the Athlete of the Year in the Eastern Division is West Chester’s Faith Matter. Her nine goals and 11 assists gave her a total of 29 points for the season, the top total in the East. Her assist tally was the best in the PSAC. Matter also was named the Freshman of the Year for the East back in the 2022 season.
The remaining Major Award winners all hail from Shepherd University. Delaney Bittner was voted the Defensive Player of the Year and was a key part of the Rams’ stout defense which allowed just eight goals in the 2024 regular season, the lowest total in the Eastern Division. She also chipped in with three assists on the offensive end.
Freshman of the Year Hannah Wilt started all 18 games in goal for the Rams and carries a .476 goals-against-average, the second-best mark in the PSAC and tops in the East. She made 54 saves with a .857 save percentage (tied for fourth-best in the conference) while her 10 shutouts was also tied for the league lead.
Rams’ head coach Sam Odell was honored with the East’s Coach of the Year award after orchestrating an East-best 14-1-4 overall record (13-1-2 PSAC)—a vast improvement over 2023’s 7-5-6 overall record (5-5-6 PSAC). The Rams’ 36 regular season goals were tied with West Chester for most in the Eastern Division, while Shepherd’s eight goals allowed were the East’s lowest total.
Of the 52 total PSAC Women’s Soccer All-Conference honorees this fall, 26 are former All-Conference selections, while the other half have been named to an All-PSAC team for the first time in their respective careers.
