LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference announced the PSAC Women’s Tennis All-Conference teams and Major Award Winners for the 2023-24 season on Friday afternoon.
Major Award winners in the Eastern Division include Millersville’s Noelle Htwar as Athlete of the Year, Kuztown’s Bieke Roovers as Freshman of the Year, and Millersville’s Matt Helsel as Coach of the Year.
In the Western Division, Slippery Rock’s Amaia Balaguer Brau (Athlete of the Year) and Nicole Kempton (Freshman of the Year) were selected, as was 2023-24 Coach of the Year Andrew McGlashen of IUP.
All-Conference Teams and Major Award winners are determined by a vote of the league’s head coaches.
EASTERN DIVISION
Millersville’s Noelle Htwar earns the Athlete of the Year award with an unbeaten 5-0 singles record against PSAC East competition and also finished with an overall doubles record of 11-9 with primary doubles partner Hui Jen Soo.
Bieke Roovers of Kutztown was selected as the Freshman of the Year after a campaign that saw her tally eight singles wins and seven doubles wins playing primarily out of the No. 2 and No. 1 flights.
Millersville’s Matt Helsel collects his third career Coach of the Year honor (also honored in 2021 and 2022) by leading the Marauders to a 15-9 overall record and a spotless 7-0 mark in PSAC play.
WESTERN DIVISION
Slippery Rock’s Amaia Balaguer Brau was voted the West’s Athlete of the Year after playing out of the No. 1 flight and accruing a 19-8 overall singles record and 12-10 doubles record playing with partner and Freshman of the Year Nicole Kempton. Brau was ranked nationally during the season and was named PSAC West Athlete of the Week on three separate occasions.
Kempton, the Freshman of the Year honoree, played out of the No. 4 flight for the Rock and finished 6-1 in singles PSAC play and 15-7 overall. Her partnership with Brau, playing out of the No. 1 doubles flight, yielded 12 additional victories.
IUP’s Andrew McGlashen, in his first year leading the Crimson Hawks, was named Coach of the Year and led the team to its fourth consecutive PSAC Women’s Tennis Team Championship. IUP‘s record stands at 16-8 overall (6-0 in PSAC play) and the squad is still alive in the postseason in the 2024 NCAA Division II Women’s Tennis Championship.
