LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference announced that nine different institutions have claimed Top Team GPA Awards for the 2023-24 academic year, with Mercyhurst University claiming the highest institutional average in the conference with a 3.518 combined GPA across 17 Laker teams.
The Top Team GPA Awards are in their 13th year of existence and are issued across 21 PSAC-sponsored sports.
The awards, released at the conclusion of every academic year, honor the teams with the top cumulative team grade point average in each of the sponsored sports within the PSAC. The conference hosts 22 championships in total, however, for award purposes, indoor and outdoor track & field are counted as a single sport.
Along with Mercyhurst, which had seven different teams with conference-high GPAs, Slippery Rock claimed five teams with conference-best marks while Gannon and Kutztown each had a pair of teams that were tops in the league. Bloomsburg, Clarion, East Stroudsburg, Mansfield, and West Chester were all honored with a Top Team GPA Award.
Mercyhurst's programs honored included baseball (3.617 GPA), men's basketball (3.622), men's cross country (3.575), football (3.243), women's soccer (3.819), softball (3.770), and women's tennis (3.717).
Slippery Rock's five program-highs were field hockey (3.647), women's lacrosse (3.714), men's track & field (3.380), women's track & field (3.641), and women's volleyball (3.720).
Gannon boasted the best team GPAs in men's golf (3.679) and women's swimming (3.680) while Kutztown was tops in women's basketball (3.745) and men's tennis (3.776).
There was a slight increase in overall average GPA in the PSAC, with 2023-24's total of 3.323 ahead of 2022-23's 3.302.
