BLOOMSBURG, Pa. --- 
The 2018 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Individual Championships concluded Monday afternoon in Bloomsburg, Pa.
 
Men’s Singles Champion: Mercyhurst's Cormac McCooey

Mercyhurst junior Cormac McCooey claimed the men’s singles individual title while becoming the second Laker to do so (Nenad Terzic, 2014). 
 
McCooey defeated three individuals from Edinboro, including a win in the championship match against Mateus Santos. 
 
The junior opened play with a challenging win against Bloomsburg’s Guillermo Carranza. McCooey won 6-2,6-3. 
 
He followed up with a victory against Edinboro’s Julius Schutte, 6-2, 6-1. 
 
In the semifinals, McCooey downed Mauricio Santos, 6-1, 6-3. 
 
McCooey won the title with identical scores of 6-3. 
 
Men’s Doubles Champion: Mercyhurst's Cormac McCooey and Unai Amilleta Gonzalez

McCooey teamed with Unai Amilleta Gonzalez to win the men’s tennis doubles championship.
 
The pair of Lakers became the third MU duo in the last four seasons to claim the doubles crown. 
 
They defeated Millersville’s Carlos Martinez and Peter Landis, 8-3, to open play. 
 
McCooey and Gonzalez won their semis and final by an identical 8-5 score.
 
McCooey became the second consecutive athlete to win the men's singles and doubles title in the same season, following Edinboro's Vitor Albanese who accomplished the feat in 2017.   
 
Women’s Singles Champion: Slippery Rock's Lacey Cohen

Slippery Rock junior Lacey Cohen claimed the crown in the women’s singles event. She is the first Rock athlete to win the title. 
 
Cohen didn’t drop a set during the championship.
 
She opened with a 6-2, 6-3 victory against East Stroudsburg’s Marina Zardet before defeating her teammate, Viola Lugmayr, 7-5, 6-2, in the round of 16. 
 
Cohen won by default in the quarterfinals before outlasting Edinboro’s Laura Lopez, 6-4, 6-3, in the semis. 
The junior defeated IUP’s Katya Minchenkova in an entertaining final, 6-4, 6-3. 
 
Women’s Doubles Champion: Mercyhurst's Kayla Frost and Sangeeta Roopan

Mercyhurst’s Kayla Frost and Sangeeta Roopan won the women’s doubles championship. It marked the second consecutive year that Mercyhurst has boasted the winning duo.
 
The pair cruised past Kutztown’s Yasmeen Malik and Alicia Pursell, 8-2, in the opening round before defeating Seton Hill’s Jenna Bailey and Kaelyn Zak, 8-3. 
 
In the semis, Frost and Roopan thrwarted IUP’s Minchenokva and Julia Newman, 8-1, before claiming the title with an 8-4 win against California’s Jo Weisen and Carolin Ganahi.

BLOOMSBURG, Pa.--- The 2018 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Individual Tennis Championships are set to take place at the Burt Reese Tennis Center in Bloomsburg, Pa.

Action will commence Saturday, September 29 and end Monday, October 1.

Edinboro's Vitor Albanese won the men's single bracket each of the last three years. He currently serves as EU's volunteer assistant coach.

Overall, Kutztown boasts six singles winners in the event while Bloomsburg and EU sport three each.

Albanese teamed with Daniel Fernandez to win the doubles bracket last season. EU and Mercyhurst have represented a winning duo in each of the last four years.

In women's singles play, MU's Saioa Gomez de Segura won the event the last four seasons and became the first four-time champion.

California has boasted the winner a league-high eight times while IUP has accomplished the feat once.

Gomez joined Adina Spahalic to win the women's double bracket in 2017. It marked the first time a MU won the event.

Overall, Cal has produced nine winning duos, while Slippery Rock, Kutztown and IUP join MU with one apiece.

The doubles brackets will open play on Saturday at 10 a.m.

The men's doubles final is slated for Sunday at 9 a.m. while the singles final is set for 2 p.m.

The women's doubles final will start at 9 a.m. Monday while the singles championship match is set for 11 a.m.
