Sumner and Hershey Earn Top Honors, 2022 PSAC Men’s Soccer All-Conference Teams Announced

The Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference released the 2022 men’s soccer all-conference teams, the league announced Thursday afternoon.

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. --- The Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference released the 2022 men’s soccer all-conference teams, the league announced Thursday afternoon.

The all-conference and major award winners are determined by a vote of the league’s head coaches.

In the West, three of the four major awards were given to Mercyhurst, including Dylan Sumner as Athlete of the Year. Sumner’s 4.38 shots per game and 13 total assists led the conference in both statistical categories. In addition to his 13 assists, Sumner also recorded nine goals to bring his season point total to 31 as the third-most in the league. Of his goals, four proved to be game-winners.

Next for the Lakers, goalkeeper Jonathan Gomes was voted as Defensive Athlete of the Year. With Gomes in the net, Mercyhurst allowed only three goals for the entirety of the season—the lowest amount in the conference by double digits. In 16 games played, Gomes posted 11 shutouts to tie for first place in Division II men’s soccer.

The last Mercyhurst award for this season is Coach of the Year, Ryan Osborne. Osborne led the Lakers to a near perfect 17-0-1 overall record and a clean 10-0 mark within the conference. This season, Mercyhurst locked up the No. 1 seed in the West with ease, earned as high as a No. 2 ranking in the United Soccer Coaches Weekly poll, and currently rank third in NCAA DII Super Region 1. With Osborne as coach, seven Lakers made a 2022 all-conference team.

The last honor out of the West went to Gannon’s Pau Ferrer. Ferrer was named Freshman of the Year after a season that saw him become his team’s third leader in points with 13 total on four goals and five assists. The freshman won one PSAC West Defensive Athlete of the Week award by coming up huge for the Golden Knights on both sides on pitch.

In the PSAC East, a variety of schools are represented among the major awards.

Lock Haven’s Samuel Hershey was chosen as the 2022 Athlete of the Year. As the 2021 Rookie of the Year, Hershey has continued to put up impressive numbers in multiple categories. The sophomore totaled the sixth-most points in the league with 26 on a combination of 11 goals and four assists. Hershey also landed the top-10 in shots and shots on goal, with 46 and 29, respectively.

The Defensive Athlete of the Year title belongs to Aaron Maynard from Millersville. Maynard is a staple of the Millersville backline that held all opponents to 15 total goals for the season—the second fewest in the league. This year marks Maynard’s first major award and second First-Team all-conference selection.

Mark Bassett takes home the Coach of the Year award for Bloomsburg. Under his direction, the Huskies clinched the PSAC East Regular Season Championship on 13-4-1 overall, 8-3-1 PSAC records. As a team, Bloomsburg scored 41 goals and 115 points to rank third in the conference in both categories. Six of Bassett’s players made all-conference this year.

The final award goes to Pieter Neerhof of East Stroudsburg University as Freshman of the Year. In his debut season for the Warriors, Neerhof started in 16 of 17 games and tied as his team’s leading scorer. Of his three total goals for the season, one was a game-winner. Neerhof’s six points also rank in the top-3 on the Warriors squad.
