PSAC Women's Basketball Athletes of the Week - 1

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. --- The Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference has announced the first round of women’s basketball athletes of the week. In the East, Bloomsburg’s Katie Starr and Mansfield’s Kristen Fulford were selected. In the West, Seton Hill’s Christiane Frye, Gannon’s Sam Pirosko and California’s Dejah Terrell earned the honor.

Katie Starr averaged 26 points and nine rebounds across two games at the Carol Eckman Conference Challenge while shooting 16-of-23 (69.6 percent) from the field and 20-of-21 (95.2 percent) on free throws. She recorded career-highs with 31 points and 15 rebounds to go with a steal against Livingstone, matching a program record going 15-of-16 (93.8 percent) from the free-throw line. Starr had a game-high 21 points with three rebounds, two assists and two steals in an 80-72 victory over Elizabeth City State. Scored 19 of 21 points in the fourth quarter to lead the Bloomsburg comeback effort in the win against the Vikings, outscoring Elizabeth City State 19-17 alone as part of a 30-point fourth quarter, as the Huskies shot 78.6 percent from the field as a team in the final 10 minutes. Starr is the first Bloomsburg player to score 30 points in a game since 2019, the first with at least 25 points and 15 rebounds since 2016 and the first with a 30-15 game dating back to 2011 with the effort against Livingstone.

Fulford was a defensive wall for Mansfield, helping the Mounties to a 1-1 start on the season with a dominant season opener victory over Bowie State. Only playing in the win, the junior picked up four steals, two blocks, and picked up five defensive rebounds in her 37 minutes in the game.

Christiane Frye averaged 26.5 points per game (a PSAC-leading mark) in a pair of games for the Griffins in the Atlantic Regional Challenge. Frye scored a team high 34 points against Fairmont State. She posted a double double of 19 points and 13 rebounds in the win over Concord.

Sam Pirosko has led Gannon to a 4-1 start with upset wins over No. 19 Angelo State (76-63) and No. 5 Tampa (68-56). Pirosko was named to the D2CCA Tip-Off Tournament All-Tournament Team. She has scored in double figures in all five games giving her 38 straight games in double figures. Pirosko’s top game was 28 points vs. Angelo State and 21 vs. Tampa. She has also had two double-doubles with 10 points and 10 rebounds vs. Texas A&M-Kingsville and 13 points and 10 boards against Glenville State. Sam is averaging 16.4 points and 7.6 rebounds per game and is now fifth in Gannon all-time career scoring with 1,623 points and 11th all-time with 644 career rebounds.

Dejah Terrell averaged 9.0 rebounds, 2.5 steals and 1.0 blocks per game over the weekend as California earned a pair of wins versus the top-two teams in the preseason MEC poll and teams that appeared in the 2023 NCAA Tournament. She also averaged 9.0 points while playing 24.0 minutes per game at the MEC/PSAC Challenge hosted by the Vulcans. Terrell, who played only two games last year due to injury, started the season with 12 rebounds (five offensive), two blocks, four steals, and 10 points for a double-double in an 84-68 victory against nationally ranked West Virginia State on Saturday. The Reading native then tallied six rebounds and one steal while scoring eight points on Sunday in a 64-48 win over Charleston.
