LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference announced the major award winners for the 2023 men’s cross country season on Thursday afternoon. Shippensburg’s Garrett Quinan was selected as Athlete of the Year while Kutztown’s Andrew Diehl earned Freshman of the Year honors. Shippensburg’s Steve Spence was named Coach of the Year after guiding the Raiders to a top team finish at the 2023 PSAC Championship Meet.
All awards were determined by a vote of the league’s head coaches.
Quinan, a sophomore, put together a stellar resume in 2023, adding a regular season win in the Dickinson Long Short 4K and a fifth-place mark in the Paul Short Brown race. He kicked it into gear in the postseason, winning the 2023 PSAC Championship race and following it up with a fifth-place mark in the NCAA Atlantic Regional to qualify for the national meet. At the NCAA Championship he crossed the finish line in 66
th place.
Kutztown’s Diehl opened the season with a win at the Adelphi Panther Invitational and was the top freshman finisher at the 2023 PSAC meet. He was the third-highest finishing freshman from the PSAC at the NCAA Atlantic Regional and was KU’s top finisher in four of six meets in 2023.
Spence led the Shippensburg men’s cross country team to its first PSAC team title since 2017, snapping a string of second-place finishes from 2020 to 2022. All five scoring runners at the PSAC meet finished in the top 15, with four of them in the top five. The Raiders also excelled at the 2023 NCAA Atlantic Regional, securing automatic qualification to the NCAA national meet with a third-place team finish.
