LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference announced its Major Award winners for the 2024 men’s cross country season on Thursday afternoon. Shippensburg University swept the awards, with Garrett Quinan selected as Athlete of the Year for the second consecutive season, Tommy Crum earning Freshman of the Year honors, and coach Steve Spence also going back-to-back as Coach of the Year after guiding the Raiders to a second straight first-place finish at this year’s 2024 PSAC Championship Meet.
All awards were determined by a vote of the conference’s head coaches.
Quinan, a junior, put together another impressive year in 2024, adding a third-place finish in the Paul Short Brown race to his second straight PSAC meet victory. He rode that momentum into the postseason, earning second place in the NCAA Atlantic Regional to qualify for the national meet. At the NCAA Championship he crossed the finish line in 51
st place.
Freshman of the Year Crum opened the season with second-place finish at the Dickinson 4k and was sixth in the Paul Short Brown race. He crossed the finish line in fourth at the PSAC meet and was eighth at the NCAA Atlantic Regional. Crum wrapped up a successful debut campaign with a 133
rd place mark at the NCAA Championship and was the top PSAC freshman finisher in all seven races in which he competed in 2024.
Coach of the Year Spence led the Shippensburg men’s cross country team to its second consecutive PSAC team title, with five runners placing in the top 10 of that meet. The team placed second at the NCAA Atlantic Regional, with four runners in the top 15, to earn automatic qualification for the national meet – where the team finished in 20
th place, an improvement from last year’s 31
st-place mark.
