IUP men’s golf concludes season with 17th place finish at 2023 NCAA Division II Men’s Golf Championship

IUP's John Olsen led the Hawks with a one-over-par 73 on day three, while Shaun Fedor (tied for 53rd place) earned the highest Crimson Hawk tournament finish.

NCAA DIVISION II MEN'S GOLF NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP

WARREN, Ohio –
The IUP men’s golf team completed the third and final round of stroke play at the 2023 NCAA Division II Men’s Golf Championship with a combined score of 306 (+18) to finish in 17th place on the leaderboard. John Olsen carded the lowest Crimson Hawk round of the day—a one-over-par 73 that included four birdies—as Olsen finished with a three-round total of 224 (+8) to tie for 59th place.
 
IUP’s Shaun Fedor played consistent golf all week and was into the clubhouse after the third round with a four-over-par 76. Fedor was the highest Crimson Hawk on the leaderboard, with a combined total of 223 (+7) to put him tied for 53rd place. Alex Swinnerton (a nine-over-par 81 in round three) and Guillermo Salazar (a six-over 78) both finished the tournament with a three-day total of 229 (+13) that places them tied for 80th place. Jackson Buccigross rounded out the Crimson Hawk lineup with a seven-over-par 79 to finish tied for 91st place after a three-round total of 232.
 
The champion for the tournament was Andrew Riley of Palm Beach Atlantic, who finished the tournament with a total of 204 (-12) after competing as an individual—just two strokes lower than second place Jordan Lee of Western Washington.
 
With stroke play concluded, the tournament now shifts to a head-to-head bracket. The top eight teams after 54 holes of play are placed into a bracket and seeded based on the 54-hole scores. The pairings for the quarterfinals are seed No. 1 versus seed No. 8, seed No. 2 versus seed No. 7, and so on. The teams then compete in head-to-head “medal” match play. Each team match consists of five points with one point being awarded for each individual hole. Winning teams will advance to the semifinals and subsequently the finals. Each individual match will be played to its completion and the first team to win three points within the team match will advance, or in the case of the final match be declared the national champion.
 
The team atop the leaderboard (and the #1 seed for the bracket) is Oklahoma Christian, who followed up its 11-under-par second round with a three-over 291 In today’s stroke play finale to finish with a total of 854 (-10), 15 strokes lower than second-place team Barry.
 

ROUND TWO RECAP

WARREN, Ohio –
IUP’s Jackson Buccigross recovered from an uncharacteristic round on the first day of the 2023 NCAA Division II Men’s Golf Championship to birdie six holes and card a one-under-par 71 on the second day, the lowest round among Crimson Hawk golfers. IUP as a team shot 295 (+7) in round two and carries a two-day total of 592 (+16) for 14th place on the leaderboard.
 
Shaun Fedor, who tallied IUP’s lowest score in round one (also a one-under 71) followed it up with a round two 76 (+4), and sits tied for 40th place on the leaderboard, the highest of all Crimson Hawks.
 
Freshman Alex Swinnerton was into the clubhouse with a two-over 74 for the second consecutive day and sits tied for 46th place, with Guillermo Salazar (the PSAC Men’s Golf individual champion) and John Olsen both shooting 75 (+3), improving by a stroke over the pair’s round one score of 76 (+4). Salazar and Olsen are tied for 66th place with two-day totals of 151.
 
The top team on the leaderboard after two rounds of play is Oklahoma Christian, who carded an incredible 11-under-par total of 277 on the second day and is a combined 13 strokes under par for the tournament. The team is second place, Barry, is 10 strokes behind with a two-day total of 573 (-3).

ROUND 1 RECAP

WARREN, Ohio –
The Indiana University of Pennsylvania men’s golf team opened up play at the 2023 NCAA Division II Men’s Golf Championship with a combined total of 297 (+9), finishing tied for 11th on the leaderboard after the first round. Shaun Fedor leads the IUP contingent with the team’s only round under par for the day, a one-under 71 that puts him tied for 14th on the leaderboard. Fedor birdied holes three, five, 11, and 15.
 
Freshman Alex Swinnerton carded a two-over 74 (tied for 40st place), with Guillermo Salazar (the PSAC Men’s Golf individual champion) and John Olsen both into the clubhouse with a four-over-par 76 to leave them tied for 60th place. The Crimson Hawk lineup was rounded out by Jackson Buccigross, who finished the day with an 82 (+10).
 
The top team on the leaderboard after round one is Missouri S&T, who shot a four-under-par 284 as a team, ahead of Grand Valley State and Oklahoma Christian (tied for second place with a two-under-par total of 286.)

NCAA DIVISION II ATLANTIC/EAST REGIONAL

ROUND 3 RECAP


LEBANON, Pa. - The IUP men's golf team carded the lowest score of any team in the field (a five-over-par 293) on Saturday at the 2023 NCAA Division II East/Atlantic Regional to finish in third place and secure a spot at this year's NCAA National Championships. The Hawks finished the tournament with a combined total of 900 (+5). The third-place finish is IUP's highest at a regional since the 2014-15 season, when the team finished second. The Crimson Hawks' Jackson Buccigross was the team's highest individual on the leaderboard, finishing tied for sixth place with a three-round total of 219 (+3).

Gannon University was tied with IUP on the leaderboard entering the final round, and finished just out of the top three, one stroke behind IUP with a 901 (+6). The Golden Knights' Giovanni Delorenzi was the PSAC's highest finisher in the tournament, ending tied for fourth place with a 218 (+2), including an even-par 72 in the final round.

Millersville University finished tied for seventh place on the leaderboard with a 910 (+15) while California (Pa.) was tied for 19th with a 941 (+46). Millersville's top individual was Ty Morral, finishing tied for 18th place with a 225 (+9), while California's top golfer was Brandon Singer, tied for 53rd place.

West Chester's Ryan D'Ariano, entered as an individual, finished tied for 16th place with a three-day total of 224 (+8).

The 2023 NCAA Division II Men's Golf Championships begin on May 22 at Avalon Lakes Country Club in Warren, Ohio.

 


ROUND 2 RECAP

LEBANON, Pa. - Gannon and IUP both have concluded Round Two of the 2023 NCAA Division II East/Atlantic Regional with a combined score of 607 (+31), good for a tie for fifth place on the team leaderboard. Millersville sits in 12th place with a two-day total of 614 (+38) while California (Pa.) is tied for 16th place with a 627 (+51).

Gannon freshman Giovanni Delorenzi is tied for fourth place on the individual leaderboard after carding back-to-back rounds of one-over-par 73. Millersville's Bobby Lugiano and IUP's Jackson Buccigross are tied for sixth place with two-day totals of 147 (+3). California's Reese Wastson continues to be the Vulcans' highest finisher on the leaderboard, ending round two in a tie for 46th with a total of 155 (+11). West Chester's Ryan D'Ariano, playing as an individual, is the Golden Rams' highest player on the leaderboard, sitting in a tie for 28th place with a total of 152 (+8).
 
The third and final round gets underway on Saturday, May 13 at Iron Valley Golf Club in Lebanon, Pa.
 

ROUND 1 RECAP

LEBANON, Pa. --- Four PSAC golf programs—Gannon, IUP, Millersville, and California (Pa.)—plus two individual competitors from West Chester have completed Day 1 of the 2023 NCAA DII Atlantic Regional Tournament.
 
Gannon leads the pack in fourth place as a team with a combined score of 301 (+13). Shaunak Rama is the top performer for the Golden Knights, sitting in a seventh-place tie with a card of 72 (E). Teammate Giovanni Delorenzi follows closely behind at 73 (+1).
 
Next, IUP recorded a team total score of 306 (+18) in Round 1 to tie Fayetteville State for ninth place. Jackson Buccigross leads all PSAC competitors after Round 1 as his score of 71 (-1) ties for third on the individual leaderboard.
 
Millersville are in a tie for 13th after scoring a combined 311 (+23) in the first round. Bobby Lugiano posted the lowest score for the Marauders and currently ties for 17th as an individual with a 74 (+2) score.
 
California (Pa.) rounds out the PSAC teams in 16th place. Their Round 1 total of 314 (+26) was led by Reese Watson who carded a 76 (+4) and ties for 29th.
 
The second round continues tomorrow at Iron Valley Golf Club in Lebanon, Pennsylvania.

INDIANAPOLIS --- The NCAA announced that four PSAC institutions—Gannon, IUP, Millersville, and California (Pa.)—have been selected to participate in regional competition of the 2023 NCAA Division II Men’s Golf Championships. Atlantic Regional play will be conducted May 11-13 at Iron Valley Golf Club in Lebanon, Pa. with Millersville acting as the host.
 
Ranked No. 1 in the Atlantic Region, Gannon will make their third consecutive appearance in the NCAA postseason. Last year, the team tied for third place in the regional tournament on their way to qualifying for the national championship. At nationals, the Golden Knights finished 19th as a unit, while Abe Holmes placed 36th overall as their top individual performance.
 
No. 2 IUP earned their bid to the playoffs after winning the 2022 PSAC Men’s Golf Championship. Last season, The Crimson Hawks placed eighth as a team while Jackson Buccigross placed eight individually. This year will be record 26th straight appearance in the regional championship for IUP dating back to 1997.
 
Millersville will make their first regional appearance since 2021 as the No. 6 seed. Although missing the cut as a team last season, Bobby Lugiano competed as an individual to tie for 34th overall. This marks the 18th regional appearance for head coach Scott Vandegrift who has led the program for the past 38 seasons.
 
Rounding out the PSAC teams is California (Pa.) at No. 9. The Vulcans tied for 14th in last year’s tournament, led by a 61st place individual finish by Connor Alfieri.
 
Competing individually for the conference are West Chester’s Ryan D’Ariano and Connor Strine.
