PSAC Women's Basketball Athletes of the Week - 6

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. --- The Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference has announced the women’s basketball athletes of the week. In the East, Lock Haven's Madeline Evans and Kutztown's Olivia Smelas were selected. In the West, IUP's Teresa Maggio and Seton Hill's Mia Kalich earned the honor.

Evans stuffed the stat sheet all week long for Lock Haven. Evans started the week by scoring 16 points, grabbing 11 rebounds and blocking a shot vs. Seton Hill. Evans followed it up with 16 points, 16 rebounds, a block and a steal in a 77-60 victory over Cal. (PA). Evans finished the week with 16 points, 16 rebounds and a steal in a 68-59 win over Slippery Rock.

In three games last week, senior forward Olivia Smelas averaged seven points per game, 10.3 rebounds per game, 4.3 assists per game, 3.3 steals per game and two blocks per game in 27.3 minutes per game. 

In a game at nationally-ranked Gannon last Tuesday, Smelas finished just shy of a double-double with nine points and eight rebounds, while adding four assists, three blocks and one steal in 24 minutes. In a victory against Clarion last Saturday, Smelas totaled four points, 14 rebounds (three offensive), five assists, four steals and one block in 26 minutes. In a win over Pitt-Johnstown, Smelas recorded eight points, nine rebounds, five steals, four assists and two blocks in 32 minutes of action. 

Smelas ranks seventh in the PSAC with 8.4 rebounds per game, fifth with 1.4 blocks per game and ninth with 2.4 steals per game.

Maggio averaged 15.7 points per game over four games, with a week-high of 19 coming against Mansfield and Bloomsburg in two PSAC games. The 110 points the Crimson Hawks scored against Mansfield were the most points scored by IUP since 2017 and the third most in program history. She also had 15 steals this week, including five against Bloomsburg. Theresa is in the top 10 in the country in three-point field goal percentage, shooting 48.8 percent, and is top in the PSAC.

Kalich led the Griffins to a trio of PSAC Crossover wins by averaging 14.3 points and 9.7 rebounds per contest.  Kalich also added 21 steals, 19 assists and 2 blocks in the three contests.  Mia posted a triple double of 18 points, 10 rebounds and 10 steals in the win at Bloomsburg.
