The Elite Scholar-Athlete Award (formerly Elite 90), founded by the NCAA, recognizes the true essence of the student-athlete by honoring the individual who has reached the pinnacle of competition at the national championship level in his or her sport, while also achieving the highest academic standard among his or her peers. The NCAA Elite Scholar-Athlete Award is presented to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade-point average participating at the finals site for each of the NCAA championships across all three divisions - I, II and III.
Initiated during the 2009-10 academic year, the award was originally named the Elite 88 Award, but was changed for the Elite 89 Award for the 2011-12 season after the addition of the Division III men's volleyball championship brought the NCAA's championship total to 89. The name was changed again to the Elite 90 Award for the 2015-16 season when the NCAA Beach Volleyball Championship was added and again shifted to the "Elite Scholar-Athlete Award" in the summer of 2025.
