LOCK HAVEN, Pa. --- The Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference released its 2022 PSAC Women’s Soccer All-Conference Teams, the league announced Thursday afternoon.
All-conference and major award winners are determined by a vote of the league’s head coaches.
Starting with the PSAC West, the Athlete of the Year, Freshman of the Year, and Coach of the Year all come from Gannon University. The Golden Knights’ Sarah Fails, Ella Fadale, and Head Coach Colin Petersen received the recognition for their contributions this season.
Gannon saw an incredible regular season that resulted in a finish atop the PSAC West standings. Sarah Fails was at the heart of the team as the conference leader in goals with 10, and in points with 25. Fails additionally put up a large number of shots, averaging 3.63 shots per game and 1.79 shots per game on goal. An impressive half of her goals this season were game-winners.
This year’s Freshman of the Year Ella Fadale also made significant contributions to the successful Golden Knights team. Fadale accounted for the second-most goals on her team with six, and amassed 13 total points with the addition of one assist for the season. Like her teammate, half of Fadale’s goals were also game-winners.
Gannon Head Coach Colin Petersen was selected as the Western Division Coach of the Year after guiding Gannon to a 12-2-4 overall record and an 11-1-4 conference mark. Gannon scored the second-most points, 95, out of all teams in the league on 36 goals and 23 assists. Defensively, they were also top-5 in goals allowed with only 14 and posted seven shutouts.
The non-Gannon major award winner out of the West was Taryn Baxter of Mercyhurst as the Defensive Athlete of the Year. She assisted the Lakers in being one of the better defensive teams in the league. This season the Mercyhurst defense posted nine shutouts and allowed 15 total goals.
Switching to the PSAC East, all major awards were given to one program—West Chester.
First, Kaitlyn Haughey received the Athlete of the Year honors for the Golden Rams. Haughey achieved top-10 in four different PSAC statistical categories. She recorded 19 total points to rank eighth, on seven goals and five assists this season. Her shot per game average was her highest ranking with 3.28 in fourth place. Haughey also tied as her team’s leading scorer alongside tallying two game-winners over the year.
Next, West Chester goalkeeper Hayley McGee earned the Defensive Athlete of the Year title after posting the most shutouts in the conference. Her 11 total shutouts tied for third in all of Division II. McGee also aided in allowing the fewest goals of any team this season, with just six over 18 games. McGee’s save percentage also impressed as she ranked first in the league again with a .924.
Faith Matter continued the award sweep for West Chester as the chosen Freshman of the Year. Matter made her debut as the team-leader in total points with 20, made up of seven goals and six assists. Out of her seven goals on the season, four were game-winners to rank third in the PSAC.
Lastly, Golden Rams coach Betty Ann Kempf Townsley was given the Coach of the Year. With her at the helm, West Chester achieved a near spotless 16-0-1 overall record, and a 15-0-1 PSAC mark. West Chester entered the postseason as the clear number one team in the league after scoring the most goals, 47, while also allowing the fewest, 6. This season marked Townsley’s seventh PSAC East Regular Season title.
In terms of all-conference honorees, 10 athletes are appearing on the all-conference team for multiple times in their careers.
